I was interested in the the way the modern mania for putting logos and text on clothing created a whole layer of this crowded tapestry.

Yes, a strange trend and, like so much that we live with today, so difficult to explain. If a Martian asked why that guy wore an advertisement, how could we answer? And you know how unpleasant Martians can be.
